The painting shows St. Francis of Paola holding a rosary and a staff. His iconography includes a flaming symbol of caridad (charity). St. Francis founded the Order of Minims, or Hermits of Saint Francis, in 1436 near Reggio, Italy. Francisco de Paola was one of the most popular saints in Mexican retablo art.
