Jharkhand is a state in the northeast of India, recently formed from part of the state of Bihar. In the region of Hazaribagh, an area known for its Neolithic rock art, there are a number of art projects and funds that support the work of tribal artists, usually women artists. This art, now done on paper, is derived from traditional wall paintings. The handmade paper is treated with earth and glue, and the designs are brushed on in water-based paint made from natural pigments. The designs may be further elaborated by dragging a comb through the paint. Typical subjects include animals, birds, and plants.
